Samsung display control over the network

Power, input, locks and kiosk lock-down for Samsung signage displays, from one tool.

Problem

A Samsung signage display in a public place can be switched off, changed to another input or opened in its menu by anyone who reaches the remote or the touch screen. Setting each display by hand means a visit, and the settings differ from one screen to the next.

What we built

A command-line tool and a local web page that talk to Samsung displays over the network using Samsung's own MDC protocol. They read power, input, volume, model, firmware and locks; switch the picture on and off and the input; and apply one kiosk setting that locks the keys, the touch admin menu and the power button, with the previous values saved so they can be put back. Settings move to a display by name, or to all displays at once.

Result

Verified on one Samsung QB24C-T. Tests run against a simulated display. Touch on and off has no command in this firmware, so the tool sends the same menu steps a person would and says the state is not readable.
